Good Energy Food!

Img 6049

I have recently been inspired by a book I read called Good Energy by Casey Means MD.  In this book she explains how we literally are what we eat.  She explains how the food we eat becomes the building blocks the make up our cells and become the molecules in our bodies.  Means says the most important key to health is our metabolic function.  She says that when we give our bodies ‘good energy’ (aka, fresh, local, organic, and seasonal food) we are giving our bodies the fuel that impacts our physical and mental well-being.

Most impressively to me she explains that many of the diseases that are common today like depression, infertility, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, cancer and more all have the same root cause.  She explains how health is not complicated.  It comes down to consuming clean, whole foods.  Whether you’re a vegan or a carnivore, when you remove processed foods from the diet, stay active, get good sleep, and find ways to experience joy in your life you are doing the best possible thing for your health.  I just love how she says the myriad of health philosophies out there just confuse us and she explains how the answers to health are actually very simple, delicious and not complicated at all.

Health is another one of my core values.  I care deeply about my own health, the health of my family, and the health of my community.  I care about plant health and soil health too which is lucky for us all!

I hope this newsletter feels more like a pat on the back to you for making such a great choice in joining a local CSA farm.  I may be preaching to the choir, but I know how good it can feel to know that we made a good choice.  It’s affirming to hear others say what we suspect or already know.  This is meant more to congratulate and empower you than to judge.

I believe there is a difference, and I suspect you do too, in fresh, local and organic produce and produce from the grocery store shipped in from huge farms across the country-or globe sometimes.  Sometime we need to buy that produce in the winter when local produce is not available, but when it’s in season locally we can do our bodies good by choosing the produce that was harvested just a day or two before your received it, from farmers you know and trust, grown without chemicals, in soil that is mineralized.

On a slightly more “Woo-Woo” note, I also believe that Food is made largely of water.  Water vibrates.  Water carries energy and has memory and maybe even consciousness.  If we choose to eat food that was grown with love, handled with love, and delivered and consumed in love, we are doing the best possible service to our bodies.  What happens then if we pray with our food, bless it, and share it in love?  Does it improve the digestibility?  Does it fuel our bodies in more than just calories?  Is clean food that is grown with love and prayed over healthier for our bodies?

I can’t prove it because I’m just a mother and farmer, but I believe it.  I believe “Good Energy” can be interpreted in more ways that one.  I believe there is more to food than carbohydrates, fats and proteins.  It is also our life-line that keeps us connected to the source, is our daily opportunity for healing, and nourishes more than just our bodies and minds.  Congratulations to you for choosing “Good Energy” foods to eat this year!

What’s in the Box?

Pac Choi-  The last of the greenhouse grown pac choi this Spring.  I loved how tender and crisp everything stayed this Spring with the mild temps.  So perfect!

Cherry Belle Radish-  The radishes were absolutely perfect this season!  They aren’t spicy at all and no signs of bolting yet.  A little bigger this week than last week.

Asparagus-  One of the only crops we buy ever in the whole season because it wouldn’t be spring without asparagus!  Spears R Us out of Baraboo does a really nice job with their certified organic Asparagus!

Red Buttercup Lettuce-  Gorgeous, tender, greenhouse grown red-leaf buttercup lettuce.  Probably my favorite kind of lettuce of the season!

Spinach-  Another generous portion of spinach this week!  .77 lbs per member!  Wonderful for salads, with pasta, dips or whatever it takes to get your veggie into yo body!

Herb Packs-  Thyme, Rosemary, Basil and Parsley.  Can you tell which one is which?  All of these plants will do best if planted outside in full sun into fertile soil.  They will also grow in containers if given a fertile soil mix to grow in.

Recipes-

Home Made Sour Cream Veggie Dip (for your radishes!)

I started making my own home-made mayo a couple years ago and have not gone back. When we make it at home we can use really good, high-quality oils. The mayo in the grocery stores is all made with soybean or canola oils which you don’t want to be eating! Watch how easy it is to make home-made mayo with your best avocado oil or olive oil.
