Fall Reflections

The transition into fall feels official, pronouncing itself with rain, lightning, thunder and evening temperatures dropping into the 40’s at night.  We were very lucky on the farm to have only gotten about 2 inches of rain last Friday night.  Now, the mornings are crisp, breezy and generally overcast.  Many of the fields on the farm look ‘spent’, harvested over, like the plants have completed their life cycle.  But Fall is only just beginning.

While rain and cool weather is no surprise for fall weather, the lovely and most treasured moments of all to me are the brief and fleeting moments where the sun is shining, the leaves are glittering, and the air is warm.  The earthy colors of red, orange, and yellow glowing amid the brown.  Fall is my favorite time of year.  I love working outside on a cool day and coming into a warm house.  I love making apple pie, pumpkin pie and warming fall soups.  I love the food, the weather, and the growing amount of time I get to spend with my family in the evenings.

We have finished bringing in the winter squash and most of the potatoes now for the season.  Soon we will begin harvesting sweet potatoes, celeriac root and fun fall crops like parsnips and brussels sprouts.  We also have several beds of carrots yet to harvest before the season is over.  We also have fall storage radishes like beauty heart radishes and diakon radishes to be offered in the remaining weeks of the summer share deliveries.

We’re excited to be harvesting off of our fall brassica field covering kohlrabi, broccoli and cauliflower plantings.  Brassicas do love cool weather, minus all the rain, the brassicas will thrive in the cooler daytime and nighttime temps.  The fall spinach is coming along nicely which is loving all of the cool weather now as well.  We’re hoping for a little more dry weather now to make it easier for us to get the crops out of the ground this fall without bringing in so much mud to the packing shed.

We haven’t started any fall field clean-up which will happen in the weeks to come.  The plastic mulch will need to be removed, the irrigation lines wrapped up, the garlic and strawberry bed mulched.  We begin to feel the waning of the season as we close in on the final three weeks of the Summer Share deliveries.  In the meantime, I will try to slow time by enjoying the beauty in each day, each moment, each beautiful arrangement of fresh, local and organic produce so long as it lasts!  Winter can just wait!

What’s in the Box?

Tomatoes-  8lb bags of tomato mix.  The tomatoe production has really dropped off now.  We’re still picking every couple days, but now we’re only getting a few crates full, when we were getting trucks full!  There will still be some tomatoes next week, but likely a much smaller bag.
Gold Potatoes-  2.5 lbs of fresh, gold potatoes.  We didn’t wash them this week so as not to damage them.  Stores best in an area that is cold, dark and dry.  The golds did very nice this year!
Acorn Squash-  Acorn squash are the classic winter squash that everyone knows and loves!  They store best a room temperature.  Do not refrigerate.
Napa Cabbage-  A special, seasonal treat!  Napa is traditionally used to make kimchi, but it is also lovely eaten raw as a fresh salad green.
Red Curly Kale-  We’re getting back into the season of enjoying our cooking greens.  Kale is lovely in soups, casseroles, on pizza, in egg bakes or toasted with a little oil in the oven!
Carrots-  1lb per member!
Onion-  One White onion per box.
Peppers-  1-2 bell peppers per member.  Pepper production was down a bit this week.  We’re hoping that we don’t get any early frosts this year and we can continue to pick peppers until Week 20 for you!
Hot Peppers-  One Jalapeno Pepper that could have been red or green.  Jalapenos are hot!  You also received a hungarian hot wax pepper that could have been red or lime-green.  The Hungarian Hot wax peppers are technically a hot pepper, but they do not have as much heat as the jalapenos.
Kohlrabi-  1-2 Kohlrabi per member.  From all the kohlrabi’s that we harvested this Spring, you should be pros at how to use them now!  Delicious peeled and eaten raw, but kohlrabi can also be cooked too!
Broccoli or Cauliflower-  Either one head of broccoli or cauliflower per box this week!  Some very fun purple broccoli in some boxes this week!
Next Week’s Best Guess:  Green cabbage, spaghetti squash, potatoes, celeriac root, onion, collards, lettuce?, tomatoes, peppers, broccoli/cauliflower, parsley?, cilantro?, kohlrabi?
